Cross-Country Skiing Near Bethel, Maine: Where to Glide This Winter
Three Nordic networks within an hour of the treehouses, from groomed corduroy in Bethel village to 100 km of trails in Jackson, NH.
By Gwen & Danielle
You know the feeling. Fresh corduroy, wax that's working, and that first long glide where everything lines up. The tracks run ahead through the trees, your poles find their rhythm, and the only plan for the day is more of this.
Western Maine has the snow, the terrain, and the trails to make that feeling last all winter. Here's where to chase it.
Bethel Village Trails
Corduroy before coffee
Twenty-five kilometers groomed for both classic and skate, right in Bethel village. Warm up on the open fairway loops, then cross Route 5 to the Pine Hill trails, where the woods get curvier and the climbs get steeper. Check the trail conditions page in the morning, ski hard, and be in the village for lunch.
- ✦21 Broad Street, Bethel · Open daily 9–4 · Day pass $27 adults ($20 after 2 pm), $22 seniors · On the Indy Pass for 2026–27 · About 25 minutes from the treehouses
Carter's XC Ski Center
Riverside fields and wooded climbs
More than 55 km of trails on a family-run property that's been grooming since 1985. Open fields along the Androscoggin River give you room to stretch out. Then the trails turn into the woods for steep climbs that will test your legs. Carter's also has backcountry terrain for when the groomed tracks aren't enough.
- ✦786 Intervale Road, Bethel · Trail pass $24 adults, $20 seniors · About 25–30 minutes from the treehouses
Jackson XC, New Hampshire
100 km, one covered bridge, and the Wave
One of the great Nordic networks in New England, and worth the drive. More than 100 km of trails wind along the Ellis River, past a covered bridge and a white-steepled church. Rip down the Wave, a 2 km downhill run. When snow is thin in the valley, head up to Prospect Farm, which often holds more. Stop at the Cocoa Cabin warming hut, then keep going until the light fades.
- ✦153 Main Street, Jackson, NH · Trail pass $25 adults · Classic and skate rentals · About 1 hour from the treehouses
Make a week of it
With three trail networks within an hour, you can ski a different one every day. Start in Bethel, take Carter's on day two, and save Jackson for the day you want to go long.
Season pass holders: a Carter's season pass gets you half-price day passes at partner centers, including Inland Woods + Trails, which runs Bethel Village Trails.
Après-ski, treehouse style
You skied the long loop, then the longer one. Now your quads are filing a complaint.
At the Spruce Suite, the answer is on the deck. The private hot tub is open all winter, and it's the best recovery plan you'll find in western Maine. Sink in, look up through the birches, and replay the downhill that almost got you. Then up to the loft, where beautiful bedding is waiting for two very tired skiers.
At Grand Oak, everyone has a split time and a story. Lay the trail maps out on the table, pull a round of espresso, and plan tomorrow over dinner from the full kitchen. Boots dry, the new propane fireplace warms the main room, the private firepit crackles outside, and eight skiers negotiate who gets the sunken soaking tub, the private hot tub on the deck, and the electric fireplace up in the loft.
Both treehouses are heated, open all winter, and each has its own private hot tub.
Take a snow day. You've earned one.
